Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum were really interesting ruins to visit - and a great place for Sean because for some of it he could climb and run around. We got audio guides (picture to the left of Sean and Mike listening), but like in the Colosseum, nothing was marked so we didn't know what we were supposed to be looking at! This is a huge place and is right next to the Colosseum - the whole area was considered the center of Roman life for a long time. In the picture on the top left, you can kind of see the palace where the emperior lived - a huge structure for one family! I can only imagine the living conditions for their slaves - probably a cave dug into the side of one of the hills. In the other picture, Sean is drinking from an Italian drinking fountain - they are in various spots all around Rome and we were not sure how safe the water would be, but we saw lots of people using them and fortunately Sean didn't have any problems!
After Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, we walked around a bit to try and find lunch - and just happened upon an Argentian grill. Yeah, no Italian food for a change! We were all getting tired of pasta or pizza (especially Sean, who only eats spagetti with butter or cheese pizza), and I was able to get a salad!!! It tasted SO good!! Then of course we got gelato and sat in the sun and ate it in a piazza designed by Michelangelo - Capitoline Hill. This area overlooks the Roman Forum and was fun to see the area from above.
