On Saturday, we went to Covent Garden Market to watch the street performers. Sean loves watching them, and especially likes to give them money. So we gave him a "budget" and he got to decide who to give money to and how much. It was a great way for Mike to get rid of some of his old 75pence coins that he had from his study abroad during college. They don't make 75p coins anymore, so he brought them along to see if he could sell them to a coin dealer...didn't work so the street performers got them! Some of the street performers actually perform acrobatics, mime, etc. and some are "statues" that move/talk when you give them money. This "dog" is pretty fun, as is
the "invisible man". Some of the comedy is a bit racy, so we are glad that Sean doesn't understand what they are saying... We were able to get Sean into the National Gallery for about an hour so we could all see our favorite paintings. Sean has two favorites that we see all the time at the Trafalgar Square tube stop (the tube next to the National Gallery - they have posters of some of the paintings). He really likes a painting of St. George slaying the dragon, and another one of a battle scene. Mike's new favorites are scenes of Venice, and I still like the Impressionists - can't pick just one!
We went to Chinatown for dinner, which was really good. We tried dim sum and loved it - even Sean! Mike and I will go back to that area when we go to some shows because it is so close to the theatre district. We are going to Billy Elliot for sure (with the CSB/SJU students as part of a class) and we'll do another one next week after my parents arrive. We'll hit up the cheap "day of" ticket booth, so we don't know what we'll be able to see. Gotta love free babysitting! I can't believe how much my friends here pay for babysitting! Close to $15/hour for 2 kids - and they pay for the cab ride home!
The other picture is of Sean next to the Maida Vale Tube sign - this is the closest stop to our flat. We have found the underground to be a really easy, efficient and fast way to get around. It is safe and clean - the only disadvantage is that you don't see anything while you are on it. But with Sean's motion sickness, we haven't been able to do many buses.
On Friday I went to the Victoria and Albert Museum for their new exhibit on Theatre and Performance...and I got to see Adam Ant's Prince Charming costume!! He was my favorite performer in high school and it was SO great to see his signature costume. They had lots of other cool costumes (Mick Jagger's jumpsuit from one concert - he must be a size 0! Elton John, Queen, etc). Some from theatre and some from music. They had several videos of various things, and I especially liked the Wicked backstage video.
